     Azure Variable Groups

Azure DevOps Variable Groups are a valuable feature that allows you to centralize and manage variables that are used across multiple pipelines within your Azure DevOps organization. Variable Groups help you maintain consistency and security in your DevOps processes. Here’s some information about Azure Variable Groups:

  1. Centralized Variable Management: Variable Groups provide a central place to define and manage variables that can be shared across multiple pipelines, such as build and release pipelines. This makes it easier to maintain consistency in your configuration.

  2. Sensitive Variables: Variable Groups can include sensitive variables like secrets, passwords, API keys, and connection strings. These sensitive variables are securely stored and can be encrypted, ensuring that sensitive information is protected.

  3. Scoped Variables: You can define the scope of variable groups to make them available at the project or organization level. This allows you to control who can access and use these variables.

  4. Versioning: Variable Groups support versioning, allowing you to update and manage variables over time while preserving the ability to use older versions of the variable group if needed.

  5. Variable Linking: In your pipeline, you can link to a variable group and reference its variables. This ensures that the latest values from the variable group are used in your pipeline runs.

  6. Pipeline Templates: Variable Groups can be particularly useful when using pipeline templates. They allow you to define variables in a template and use them across multiple pipelines, making it easier to maintain and update shared configurations.

To create and manage Variable Groups in Azure DevOps:

  1. Go to your Azure DevOps organization.

  2. Select the project where you want to create the Variable Group.

  3. Under “Pipelines,” go to “Library” and choose “Variable groups.”

  4. Click on “New variable group” to create a new one or edit an existing variable group.

  5. Define the variables and their values within the variable group.

  6. Specify the scope and permissions for the variable group.

  7. Save your changes.

When using Variable Groups, it’s important to ensure that sensitive information is appropriately protected and access to variable groups is restricted to authorized users only. This helps maintain the security of your DevOps processes.
