Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) is a managed service that you can use to run Kubernetes on AWS without having to install, operate, and maintain your own Kubernetes control plane or nodes. As of my last training data in September 2021, here’s how it works:

1. **Kubernetes Control Plane:** EKS runs the Kubernetes management infrastructure (called the Control Plane) across multiple AWS availability zones to ensure high availability. It automatically detects and replaces unhealthy control plane instances, and it provides automated version upgrades and patching.

2. **Worker Nodes:** You are responsible for provisioning and managing the worker nodes for your EKS clusters. These are the virtual machines that run your Kubernetes applications. AWS provides various ways to provision these worker nodes, including EC2 instances, AWS Fargate (for serverless containers), and AWS Managed Node Groups (which automates the provisioning and lifecycle management of nodes).

3. **Integration with AWS Services:** EKS is deeply integrated with AWS services such as Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) for load distribution, IAM for authentication, and Amazon RDS for persistent storage. This makes it easier to build and run complex, enterprise-class applications that require a combination of these services.

4. **Security and Compliance:** EKS is also integrated with AWS security and compliance services, like AWS IAM for fine-grained access control, Amazon VPC for network isolation, and AWS CloudTrail for logging.
