Mastering Configurability: How to Create a Super BOM in SAP PP

Managing Bill of Materials (BOMs) can become a tangled mess in the world of complex products with multiple variations. Enter the Super BOM, a powerful tool in SAP PP (Production Planning) that helps you easily handle this complexity.

A Super BOM is an umbrella encompassing all the components needed to produce various product versions. It offers a centralized view, eliminating the need for individual BOMs for each variant.

This blog will guide you through the steps of creating a Super BOM in SAP PP:

Prerequisites:

  • The material you want the Super BOM for must be configurable (material type KMAT) in the Material Master.
  • You’ll need to have created the characteristics that define the variations of your product.

Creating the Super BOM:

  1. Transaction Code:  Use transaction code CS01 to create a new BOM.
  2. Material Details: Enter the configurable material number, plant, and BOM usage (e.g., production).
  3. Component Details:  Navigate to the components screen. Here’s where the magic happens!
    • Components: List all the possible elements that could be used in any product variant.
    • Selection Conditions: This is where configurability comes in. Use selection conditions to define which components are based on specific characteristic values. Various tools, including variant tables, user-defined functions, and dependency syntax, are available for defining these conditions.
  1. Class Items (Optional):  For a cleaner structure, consider using class items (item category N) instead of individual BOM items with complex selection conditions. Class items can represent groups of components based on characteristics.
  2. Save: Once you’ve defined all components and their selection conditions, save the Super BOM.

Additional Tips:

  • The Super BOM can also include other configurable materials as components, adding another layer of complexity and flexibility.
  • Utilize the configuration profile (CU41) to define how characteristic values are assigned during the configuration process.

Leveraging Super BOMs can streamline your production planning process for configurable products. It ensures clarity, reduces errors, and improves efficiency in managing BOMs for complex products.
