Order Type Configuration in SAP PP

Mastering Production with Order Types in SAP PP

Organization is critical in the dynamic world of Production Planning (PP). SAP PP offers the concept of Order Types, a powerful tool for categorizing and controlling production processes. This blog delves into the configuration of Order Types, empowering you to optimize your shop floor.

What are Order Types?

Think of Order Types as blueprints for your production orders. They define the specific settings and behaviors for different manufacturing scenarios. For example, you might have a separate Order Type for in-house production (discrete manufacturing) and another for subcontracting (external procurement).

Configuring Order Types: A Step-by-Step Guide

Here’s a roadmap to configure Order Types in SAP PP:

  1. Define the Order Type (SPRO): This is the foundation. Use transaction code OPJH to create a new Order Type or copy an existing one. Assign a descriptive name and define its plant independence.
  2. Assign a Number Range (SNRO): Production Orders need unique identifiers. In SNRO, create a number range (internal or external) specifically for your Order Type.
  3. Set Order Type-Dependent Parameters (OPL8): Here’s where the customization magic happens. Use OPL8 to define plant-specific settings like backflush (automatic goods movement upon confirmation) and explosion (automatic component reservation during order creation).
  4. Define Checking Control (OPJK): This step establishes control procedures for your Order Types. In OPJK, define checks for various order statuses (e.g., order creation, release) to ensure data accuracy and adherence to quality standards.
  5. Configure Confirmation Parameters (OPK4): Production confirmations track progress. Use OPK4 to define how confirmations are recorded (manually or automatically) based on your Order Type.
  6. Set Scheduling Parameters (OPU3): Production scheduling is crucial. In OPU3, define scheduling parameters specific to your Order Type, influencing factors like lead times and capacity checks.

Benefits of Configuring Order Types

By meticulously configuring Order Types, you reap several benefits:

  • Enhanced Control: Streamline production processes and ensure adherence to specific requirements for each manufacturing scenario.
  • Improved Efficiency: Automate repetitive tasks and define transparent workflows based on Order Types, saving valuable time and resources.
  • Accurate Data: Define data checks and control procedures to maintain data integrity throughout the production lifecycle.

Conclusion

Order Types are a cornerstone of effective production management in SAP PP. Investing time in configuration empowers your organization to achieve optimal production control, efficiency, and data accuracy.
