Phantom Assembly in SAP PP

Demystifying Phantom Assemblies in SAP PP

In SAP Production Planning (PP), efficiency reigns supreme. But what if you have a product with a complex Bill of Materials (BOM) containing sub-assemblies that aren’t physically produced? This is where phantom assemblies come in, offering a clever way to streamline your BOM structure.

What is a Phantom Assembly?

Imagine a car engine. It has various components like pistons, valves, and a crankshaft. These components might be grouped into a sub-assembly called “Engine Block” in the BOM. However, the engine block isn’t a separate product you stock or sell. It’s assembled directly into the final car.

A phantom assembly is like this engine block. It has its own BOM listing the required components but needs a physical existence. When you produce the final product (the car), the system automatically triggers the consumption of the components listed in the phantom assembly’s BOM.

Benefits of Using Phantom Assemblies

  • Simplified BOM Structure: Break down complex products into logical sub-assemblies without cluttering your BOM with unnecessary finished products.
  • Improved Efficiency: MRP (Material Requirements Planning) considers the components of the phantom assembly during production planning, ensuring suitable materials are on hand.
  • Reduced Workload: Eliminate the need for separate production orders for phantom assemblies, saving time and resources.

Configuring Phantom Assemblies in SAP PP

Here’s a quick rundown of how to set up phantom assemblies in SAP PP:

  1. Material Master:
    • Create a material master record for the phantom assembly.
    • In the MRP 2 view (MRP2), set the procurement type to “E” (Phantom) and the particular procurement type to “50” (Assembly).
  2. Bill of Materials:
    • Create a BOM for the phantom assembly, listing all its components.
    • Mark the components in the BOM as “Phantom.”

Remember: Phantom assemblies don’t require routings (production instructions) as they aren’t physically produced.
