Tableau ODBC

Tableau provides the ability to connect to various data sources using the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) protocol. ODBC is a standard interface that allows applications, including Tableau, to access data in a consistent and efficient manner from a variety of database management systems.

Here’s how you can use ODBC to connect to data sources in Tableau:

  • Install ODBC Driver:
    • If you’re connecting to a data source that requires an ODBC driver (such as a database system), you’ll need to install the appropriate ODBC driver on your machine.
  • Connect to Data Source:
    • Open Tableau Desktop.
    • On the “Connect” pane, select “More Servers” > “Other Databases (ODBC)”.
  • Select ODBC Connection:
    • Choose the ODBC connection from the list of available data source connections.
  • Configure ODBC Connection:
    • Configure the ODBC connection by selecting the appropriate ODBC data source name (DSN) and providing any required authentication credentials.
  • Choose Tables/Views:
    • After establishing the ODBC connection, you’ll be able to see the available tables and views from the data source. Select the tables or views you want to use in your analysis.
  • Create Visualizations:
    • Build your visualizations and dashboards using the data from the ODBC-connected data source.
  • Save and Share:

    • Save your Tableau workbook and publish your visualizations to Tableau Server, Tableau Online, or export them for sharing with others.
