navigating Nationality in SAP HR: Tables and Transactions

In SAP HR, managing employee nationality is crucial for various purposes, from payroll to work authorization tracking. This blog post dives into the key tables and transactions you need to know for nationality data in SAP HR.

1. Storing Nationality: The Infotype Approach

While there might be a dedicated table for nationality codes (we’ll get to that later), SAP HR stores employee nationality within info types. The primary info type for this is:

  • IT0002 – Personal Data

This info type contains several fields relevant to nationality:

  • NATIO (Nationality): This field stores the employee’s primary nationality code.
  • NATI2 (Second Nationality) (Optional): You can utilize this field for employees with dual citizenship.
  • NATI3 (Third Nationality) (Optional): This field offers space for a third nationality if needed.

2. Accessing and Maintaining Nationality Data

There are two main ways to access and maintain nationality data for employees:

  • PA30 – Maintain Personal Data

This transaction code allows you to directly access and update the IT0002 info type. You can navigate the relevant fields (NATIO, NATI2, NATI3) and make necessary changes.

  • HR Reports (Depending on your SAP HR version)

SAP HR offers various reports that allow you to view and analyze employee nationality data. These reports can be helpful for tasks like workforce demographics analysis or compliance reporting.

3. The Table Behind the Codes: T005T

While info types store employee-specific nationality data, there’s a table that holds the actual nationality codes and their descriptions:

  • T005T – Country Keys

This table stores information about countries, including their codes and corresponding nationalities. You can’t directly maintain nationality data here, but it provides the foundation for the codes used in info types like IT0002.

Transaction code: OY01 – Maintain Country

This transaction code allows you to access and maintain entries in the T005T table. Here, you can view existing nationality codes and descriptions or add new ones if required (consult your system administrator for authorization).

Important Note: Remember to modify standard SAP tables like T005T with caution and proper authorization.

Conclusion

Understanding how SAP HR manages nationality data through info types, transactions, and tables is essential for HR professionals and anyone working with employee data. This knowledge empowers you to maintain accurate employee information and leverage nationality data for various HR functions.
