Azure LRS
Azure LRS stands for “Locally Redundant Storage” in the context of Microsoft Azure. It is a storage redundancy option provided by Azure for Azure Storage services, including Azure Blob Storage, Azure File Storage, and Azure Queue Storage. LRS is designed to enhance the durability and availability of data stored in Azure by replicating it within a specific Azure region.
Here are the key characteristics and benefits of Azure LRS:
Redundancy within a Region: With Azure LRS, data is redundantly stored within a single Azure region. This means that multiple copies of your data are maintained within data centers in the same region, providing resilience against local hardware failures.
Data Durability: Azure LRS ensures high data durability by maintaining at least three copies of your data. These copies are stored in separate fault domains and update domains to protect against hardware failures and planned maintenance events.
Local Failover: In the event of a localized hardware failure or a transient issue affecting one copy of your data, Azure automatically fails over to one of the redundant copies within the same region. This ensures that your data remains accessible and available.
Cost-Effective: Azure LRS is a cost-effective redundancy option compared to other redundancy levels such as Geo-Redundant Storage (GRS) or Zone-Redundant Storage (ZRS). It is suitable for workloads that require redundancy within a single region.
Low Latency: Data replication within the same region results in low-latency access to your data. This is important for applications and services that require fast data retrieval and responsiveness.
Limited Geographic Redundancy: It’s important to note that Azure LRS provides redundancy within a single region, which means that it may not protect against regional outages or disasters. For higher levels of geographic redundancy, Azure offers options like Geo-Redundant Storage (GRS), which replicates data to a paired region.
Use Cases: Azure LRS is typically used for non-critical data, backups, and archival data where high availability across regions is not a strict requirement.
