Workday HCM Consultant Roles and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  1. Business Analysis and Requirements Gathering:
    1. Work closely with client stakeholders to understand their HR processes, challenges, and goals.
    2. Analyze current systems and procedures to identify areas for improvement.
    3. Translate business needs into clear, actionable Workday configuration requirements.
    4. Document and present solution designs in a way that’s understandable to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  2. System Configuration and Design:
    1. Leverage Workday’s functionalities to build a solution that aligns with the client’s requirements. This includes configuring:
      1. Core HCM modules (organizational structure, job profiles, compensation, etc.)
      2. Talent Management (recruiting, performance management, learning, etc.)
      3. Payroll (if applicable)
    2. Time Tracking and Absence Management
    3. Ensure solutions adhere to Workday best practices and industry standards.
  3. Integration Development:
    1. Design and build custom integrations between Workday and other systems (e.g., payroll providers, benefits platforms, third-party applications).
    2. Expertise in Web Services and Workday Studio is often needed.
  4. Testing and Validation:
    1. Develop comprehensive test plans and scenarios to cover all aspects of the Workday implementation.
    2. Perform unit testing, system testing, and integration testing.
    3. Troubleshoot issues, document solutions, and track defects to resolution.
  5. Change Management and Training:
    1. Work with client teams to prepare them for the new Workday system.
    2. Develop training materials, user guides, and documentation.
    3. Conduct training sessions (in-person or virtual) for different roles within the organization.
  6. Deployment and Go-Live Support:
    1. Support data migration activities.
    2. Collaborate closely with project teams during the cut-over and go-live phases.
    3. Provide ongoing post-implementation support, resolving issues and optimizing the system.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  1. Workday Experience: 2+ years of experience in Workday HCM implementations or support.
  2. Certifications: Workday Core HCM, Integrations, and other relevant certifications are highly valued.
  3. Functional HR Knowledge: Strong grasp of HR processes in areas such as recruiting, compensation, payroll, benefits, performance management, etc.
  4. Business Acumen: Understand how technology and HR practices enable business outcomes.
  5. Consulting Skills: Excellent communication, problem-solving, stakeholder management, and adaptability.
  6. Project Management: Experience working within structured methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, etc.).

Additional Responsibilities Based on Seniority:

  1. Senior Consultant: Leads client workshops, participates in presales activities, provides subject matter expertise, and mentors junior consultants.
  2. Team Lead/Manager: Responsible for project delivery, team management, budgeting, and client relationship management.
