Product Management is one of the 7 DevOps Practices

Product Management is not typically considered one of the core DevOps practices. DevOps, a set of practices that combine development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops), focuses on fostering collaboration and communication between development and operations teams to deliver software more effectively and efficiently.

The core DevOps practices include:

  1. Continuous Integration (CI): The practice of frequently integrating code changes into a shared repository, with automated build and test processes triggered to maintain code quality.

  2. Continuous Delivery (CD): The practice of automatically deploying code changes to production or staging environments after passing through the CI pipeline.

  3. Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Treating infrastructure configuration as code to manage and provision resources programmatically, enabling automation and version control.

  4. Continuous Deployment: The practice of automatically deploying code changes directly to production after passing through the CI/CD pipeline.

  5. Monitoring and Logging: Keeping track of the application’s performance, health, and potential issues through monitoring and logging tools.

  6. Communication and Collaboration: Encouraging open communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing between development and operations teams to break down silos.

  7. Agile and Lean Principles: Adopting agile methodologies and lean principles to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of software development and delivery processes.

Product Management, on the other hand, involves defining the vision, strategy, and roadmap for a product, understanding customer needs, conducting market research, prioritizing features, and overseeing the product development process. While it is essential for successful product development, it is not explicitly considered one of the core DevOps practices.

However, it’s worth noting that in a well-functioning DevOps culture, product managers often work closely with development and operations teams, ensuring that customer needs and business goals are aligned with the software development and delivery process. This collaboration enhances the product development lifecycle and results in delivering valuable products to customers.
