               Databricks Clusters

  • Databricks clusters are groups of computing resources that can be used to run various data processing tasks, including data engineering, data science, and data analytics. These tasks can involve building and running ETL pipelines, streaming analytics, ad hoc analysis, and machine learning models.

There are two main types of Databricks clusters:

    • All-purpose clusters: These clusters are designed for interactive use and collaboration. They are ideal for exploratory data analysis, visualization, and development work. Multiple users can share an all-purpose cluster to work together. You can start, stop, and restart these clusters manually.
    • Job clusters:  These clusters are designed for running automated jobs. They are typically short-lived and are created to execute a specific data processing task. Job clusters are a good option for production workloads where cost efficiency is essential.

Here are some of the critical things to consider when working with Databricks clusters:

    • Databricks Runtime: This refers to the software environment that runs on your cluster. It includes Apache Spark, libraries, and other tools needed for data processing. Databricks Runtime offers different versions with varying features and functionalities.
    • Cluster configuration: You can configure the size and type of virtual machines that make up your cluster. This will affect the cost and performance of your cluster.
    • Shared clusters: A recent development in Databricks is the concept of shared clusters. Shared clusters allow multiple users to execute workloads concurrently on the same cluster while maintaining data isolation through the Unity Catalog. This can be a cost-effective option for collaborative work.
